Brown’s No-Hitter Sparks Softball to Sweep of Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore pitcher Rachel Brown got the Harvard softball team off on the right foot, tossing a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Princeton to open its Ivy League schedule Friday. The Crimson improves to 8-14 on the season and has won four straight games while Princeton falls to 6-19 on the year.

Brown allowed just two base runners in game one, facing 22 batters and striking out seven to collect her first career no-hitter and sixth win of the season. Stephanie Krysiak provided all the offense Harvard would need, driving in Emily Henderson with a single and scoring on a passed ball in the third inning. Krysiak added an RBI double in the seventh and scored the final Harvard run to seal the 4-0 final.

Princeton jumped out to an early lead in game two, plating a run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Jamie Lettire double to center. Senior hurler Margaux Black kept the Crimson close through the middle of the game, pitching four strong innings and allowing just the one run. The guests mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth as Jane Alexander led off with a single and Jessica Pledger and Jessica Ferri followed with consecutive doubles to give Harvard a 2-1 lead. Ashley Heritage scored the final run of the game on a Princeton error and Brown pitched the final two innings to collect the save.  

Julia Moore was credited with the win for Harvard in game two, pitching one inning of relief and picking up one strikeout. Pledger finished the second game with two hits and an RBI.

Harvard is back in action Saturday as it takes on Cornell in an Ivy League doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.

 

 

Ivy League Schedule Opens For Softball With Princeton, Cornell

The Particulars
The Harvard softball team opens its Ivy League schedule with a pair of doubleheaders against the past two League champions this weekend. The Crimson squares off against Princeton Friday, before a twinbill at Cornell Saturday.

Last Time Out
Harvard picked up a pair of wins against Fairfield March 28. In game one, a single run proved to be enough for the visitors, as Rachel Brown allowed just one hit in seven innings of work to pick up the shutout win for the Crimson. Melissa Schellberg drove in the lone run of the game, knocking in Mariel Sena on a sacrifice fly to left after Sena led off the fourth inning with a walk.

Game two saw the hosts post runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Crimson gained control with a five-run fourth inning. Jane Alexander led off with a triple and quickly scored on a Whitney Shaw sacrifice fly. Jessica Ferri also tripled in the inning, scoring Jennifer Francis to tie the score at 2-2. Kassy Shiotani, Stephanie Krysiak and Schellberg all had RBI hits in the inning. Shaw added a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to help Harvard close out Fairfield, 10-5.

Julia Moore was credited with the win for Harvard in game two, going three innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.

Crimson Leaders
Schellberg leads Harvard with a .321 batting average and 17 hits so far this season. Jennifer Francis has a team-high nine RBI and is tied for the team lead in home runs with two, with Ellen Macadam. Rachel Brown brings a 1.86 earned run average into this weekend and leads the team in innings pitched (64.0), wins (5) and strikeouts (86).

Scouting the Tigers
Princeton carries a 6-17 record into Friday’s doubleheader, having dropped five of its last six contests. In their last action, the Tigers dropped a pair of close games at Lehigh by scores of 4-3 and 8-5. Sarah Rounsifer went 3 for 4 from the plate with two RBI in the second game against Lehigh while Kelsey Quist smacked a home run in game one.

Nicole Ontiveros is Princeton’s top hitter, leading the team with a .296 batting average and 24 hits on the year. Quist has a team-high 17 RBI and five doubles on the year, while Jamie Lettire leads the Tigers with six longballs on the season. Alex Peyton has earned three wins in the circle so far this season and leads the team with a 3.97 earned run average. Lettire and Liza Kuhn are tied for the team lead with 27 strikeouts apiece.

Scouting the Big Red
The defending Ivy League champs begin the weekend with a 12-7 record in 2010 and host Dartmouth in a doubleheader Friday before taking on the Crimson Saturday. In its last four games, Cornell is 2-2, collecting wins against Central Florida and South Florida on its spring break trip. The Big Red’s most recent game, a 4-3 win over South Florida, went to 11 innings, and Devon March registered the game-winning hit as she drove in Elise Menaker with a single in the top of the 11th.

Alyson Intihar enters the weekend leading the Ivy League in batting average with a .439 mark to go along with a team-high 29 hits. Menaker is the team RBI leader with 20 on the season and paces the team in doubles with eight, while Kristen Towne has amassed six home runs on the year. Elizabeth Dalrymple has pitched a team-high 54 innings and leads the Big Red in ERA (2.59), wins (6) and strikeouts (66).  

On The Horizon
Harvard steps back out of conference April 6 for a doubleheader against Holy Cross before hosting Penn and Columbia in its Ivy home-opening weekend April 9-10.
